LeRoy Chuma Edozien, Ubili Ka Nkwu Ahaba, is a Medical Doctor, Doctor of Law, Politician, Patriot, and a true Progressive.

 

LeRoy C Edozien is a medical doctor and Doctor of Law. His qualifications include degrees in Basic Medical Sciences (BSc, MSc), Medicine (MB BS) and Law (LLB, MPhil, PhD) from the Universities of Ibadan, London and Glasgow, and membership of UK, Irish and West African postgraduate medical colleges (FRCOG, MRCPI FWACS).

 

He holds certificates in Medical Education and Public Policy Analysis from the Royal College of Physicians and the London School of Economics and Political Science respectively.

 

A former Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at The Royal Oldham Hospital and at St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester, he served for many years as Director of Clinical Audit and Risk Management for Central Manchester teaching hospitals and as Lead for Reproductive Health and Childbirth at the Greater Manchester Comprehensive Research Network.

 

Recognised for skills in the development of healthcare standards and Patient Safety, he undertook assignments pertaining to clinical standards and patient safety for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, National Patient Safety Agency, National Institute of Health and Care Excellence and the National Institute of Health Research.

 

He has served as a medico-legal expert in courts in the UK, Ireland and Australia.

 

He received a UK national clinical excellence award in 2008 (renewed 2013) for his work as a consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and an authority in Clinical Governance.

 

Final year students at the University of Manchester honoured him as an ‘Exceptional Role Model’ in 2009.

 

He was President, North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society 2010; Chairman, British Society of Biopsychosocial Obstetrics and Gynaecology 2014-17; President, International Society of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynaecology 2019-22.

 

He is currently Professor and Director, Institute of Advanced Clinical Sciences Education, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo City. Here, he has been instrumental in developing an ‘Academic Clinician’ programme (commencing 2023/24 academic year) which will enable clinicians to undertake supervised research and earn a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. He has also been responsible for introducing the formal teaching of Medical Law in the undergraduate medical curriculum for the first time in Nigeria, and for the commencement of a Master’s degree programme in Health Law and Policy, also the first in Nigeria.

 

He has published 3 books and numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed papers.

The second edition of The Labour Ward Handbook was Highly Commended and shortlisted for the British Medical Association (BMA) Book of the Year 2010. The third edition has recently been published (2023). 
His book on ‘Self-determination in Health Care’ proposes a novel approach to the protection of patients’ rights, applying property law to promote medical professionalism.

 

He is a member of the All Progressives Party (APC, since 2017), and leader of the party in Oshimili South Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria.

 

Ubili champions the ethos of Nigeriaism which calls for the mobilisation of youths, the judicious and equitable use of national resources and the citizens’ translation of national goals into personal commitments.

 

He is convener of the campaign Promoting Thrombosis Awareness in Nigeria (PROTRAIN).
